Mild Winter Eases Electricity Demand as Fingrid Prepares for EstLink 2 Repairs

29-04-2025

Fingrid Group, Finland's national electricity transmission system operator, has reported a stable operational performance for the first quarter of 2025, despite a notable decrease in turnover. The company's management review highlights a transmission reliability rate of 100 percent and good electricity availability, attributing these achievements to the mild winter weather. This weather condition led to a decrease in electricity consumption to 23.8 terawatt hours, down from 24.6 terawatt hours in the same period last year, also contributing to lower emissions from electricity consumed in Finland.

Despite the drop in electricity usage, Fingrid's financial metrics remained robust. The company's operating profit, excluding the change in the fair value of derivatives, was virtually unchanged at EUR 119.5 million. Profit before taxes saw an increase to EUR 103.1 million, up from EUR 81.0 million in the first quarter of 2024. However, turnover for the quarter fell by 21.6% to EUR 370.7 million, primarily due to a lower balance service's share of the company's turnover, which decreased to 47 percent from 59 percent as a result of reduced imbalance power prices.

The company is also looking ahead with plans for significant capital expenditure. Fingrid estimates that gross capital expenditure for 2025 through 2028 will amount to approximately EUR 1.7 billion, with EUR 623 million already committed. This investment underscores Fingrid's commitment to maintaining and enhancing Finland's electricity transmission infrastructure amidst changing market conditions and consumption patterns.

In addition to financial and operational updates, Fingrid provided an update on the preparations for repairs on the damaged EstLink 2 transmission connection. The connection, which is co-owned by Fingrid and the Estonian TSO Elering, is expected to resume operations by mid-July. The decision to waive enforcement of the seizure of the vessel suspected of damaging the cable reflects the companies' focus on resolving the issue efficiently and ensuring the reliability of electricity transmission between Finland and Estonia.
